Located at the Palace road in the city of Cochin, Mattancherry Palace was a great gift presented to the Raja of Kochi, Veera Kerala Varma, by the Portuguese in 1555. The Dutch modified the palace in 1663, and therefore it is also called as the Dutch Palace.




This palace has a great collection of wonderful mural paintings with warm colors that are breathtaking and these murals showcases the scenes from the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharatha, which are major attractions of this palace. Also there are royal umbrellas made of silk and brass, furniture, swords and weapons placed on display.

Mattacncherry palace is a double storied building built in Kerala model that is quadrangular and has elegant white walls with sloping roofs and surrounded by trees. It’s a. In the central hall, there is a small temple with the deity Palayannur Bhagwati. On the other side, the temples are of lord Krishna and lord Shiva.

The ceilings of other halls are designed with unbelievable wooden carved floral designs including lotus that are really stunning. Also the flooring is unique.

Mattancherry is about 10km from Ernakulam and there are frequent bus and boat services. International Air Port is at Nedumbassery, near Aluva and is 22 kms away from Ernakulam. The nearest railway station is at Ernakulam, about 10km from Mattanchery.
