Sarnath museum is the archaeological museum which is a variable treasure house. This museum is an asset to Sarnath and is located across the road of the excavated site. Sir John Marshall, who was Director General of Archaeology in India, has established this museum to preserve the antiquities. This was opened in the year 1910. The museum is a rich collection of sculptures, artifacts and has approximately 7000 antiquities.
This museum also serves as the centre for research and study. There are 5 galleries and 2 verandahs. The galleries have been classified based on the contents. You will be mesmerised to see the objects placed here. Seen in the main hall is the Lion Capital of Ashoka, with the four-sided lions head, that is India’s National Emblem. Behind this is the Ashokan Pillar with Dharma Chakra. Number of Buddha statues, and standing images of tara, seated bodhisattva padmapani that are in red sandstone are in the display here.

The nearest airport is at Varanasi and can reach Sarnath in 20 minutes. Also you have a train to Varanasi which is linked to all major cities of India. Roadways are well connected to Varanasi and Gorakhpur by N.H.29.
