Sikandra – The resting place of Akbar, the great

Sikandra is the last resting place of Akbar, the Mughal emperor. When seen Taj Mahal and Sikandra Fort, the features and designs are similar. The gardens laid in this area are very much attractive with flowers and fragrance, where one can experience a peace of mind.

Akbar himself made a plan of his tomb and selected a suitable site for it and built it with a beautiful garden. Akbar’s son Jahangir completed the mausoleum of this tomb in 1613 which is in pyramid shape. The tomb has five storeys. The four storeys of the tomb are constructed with red sandstone and the top storey is constructed in white marble. Only one entrance in use today, but there are four red sandstone gates to enter into the mausoleum.

The gateway’s has four minarets seen from the corners, built of red sandstone and the minarets are built-in with white marble polygonal patterns and different styles of all architectures, which are very impressive. These gateways represent Akbar’s style.

The ideal time to visit this place is in winter and the entry for the children up to 15 years is free.
