The Taj Mahal of Agra is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Taj Mahal is the legend of eternal love and is a mausoleum of a queen who was very much loved by her king. The Taj built with soft and marble stone beside the pool with fountains and perfect gardens.

Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, was in love with his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. He was the son of the Mughal Emperor Jehangir and grandson of Akbar the Great and she was a Muslim Persian princess. He met her andfell in love at the age of 14 and in 1612, they got married. Taj Mahal was built in the memory of Mumtaz Mahal who died in 1631. Shah Jahan built “Taj Mahal” as a tribute to her, which is also known as “The crown of Palaces” on the southern bank of Yamuna River in Agra.
The construction of Taj Mahal started in 1631. Masons, carvers, stonecutters, painters, dome builders and calligraphers and other artisans were employed and it took 22 years to complete. Nearly 22,000 labourers and some elephants were involved in this. This was built completely with white marble, that was brought from all over India and central Asia and completed in 1653.The Taj Mahal resembles Mughal architecture and is “the jewel of Muslim art in India”.
How to reach
The fastest way of reaching Agra is by air. Airport at Agra is around 12 km from the city. The city also has a good network of trains, with the two stations, Raja ki Mandi and Agra Fort, along with the main station. The main trains connecting Agra with Delhi are Palace on Wheels, Shatabdi, Rajdhani and Taj Express.
There are frequent bus services from Agra to other important cities. The main bus stand is Idgah that has a number of buses – Delhi, Jaipur, Mathura and Fatehpur-Sikri. You can also get taxi and auto-rickshaw in the city to Taj Mahal.
Ideal time to visit
The ideal time to visit Agra is from November to April and is open on all days, except Friday.
