Idukki is the most popular tourist center in Kerala. Asia’s biggest and first arch dam that lies in the heart of the district is the Idukki Arch dam. This dam is of 555 ft at height and 650 ft wide, that stands between two mountains called Kuravanmala and Kurathimala. This is built on Periyar river.

There is an underground power house at moolamattom and the dam is 43 kms away from this. The construction of this dam started in 1969 and was functional in February 1973. The stored water is used to produce electricity at the Moolamattom power house.

The construction of the dam is awesome with marvellous engineering plans and amazing architectural view. The water falling is all misty and also foggy. Tourists are allowed to visit this place only on selected days in the year. Cameras and cell phones are not allowed inside the dam area.

How to reach

Idukki doesn’t have a train station. Hence Kottayam is the nearest railway station to reach by train. By air, Cochin International airport is about 99kms.
