Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the eastern slopes of the southern Western Ghats. The area of this sanctuary is of 90 sq kms and is rich in its cultural heritage.
Chinnar is a unique thorny scrub forest with xerophyte species of Kerala. This is an ideal place for trekking as it has very less rainfall annually. Due to this climatic conditions, Chinnar has a wide range of habitat types like deciduous forests, riparian forest, shoals, grasslands and many more etc. Also the added attraction to this is the extensive sandle wood forest nearby the sanctuary.
This is a repository for a wide variety of medicinal plants and also has nearly 1000 species of flowering plants. This sanctuary has a population of giant squirrel, star tortoise, tufted grey langur, gaur, deer, slender loris, elephants, crocodiles, tigers, leopard and many birds.
Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is also famous for its eco-tourism facilities that include river trekking, trekking to the cultural sites, nature trail to the watch tower, sight-seeing at the Thoovanam falls, interpretation activities and visit to the medicinal trees, tree house, trekking and camping at Vasyappara.
How to reach
Chinnar is about 60 kms away from Munnar and the nearest town is Marayur, that is 16 km away from the sanctuary. You may visit Marayur, the land of natural sandlewood and also you can see the local sharkara (yellow sugar) making units.
