Nizamabad is known for various attractions and Pocharam wildlife sanctuary is one among them. It is spread across a sprawling 130 sq. kms and was a hunting ground for the Nizam of Hyderabad before it was declared as a wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary is named after the Pocharam lake which flows near it. For making it a tourist attraction, an Eco centre has been set up in the sanctuary, which is home to many species of animals, birds and plants. The sanctuary is covered with dense forest area and many animals like leopard, wolf, bear, chital, four horned antelope and Nilgai etc. inhabit the forest.
How to reach Pocharan wildlife sancturay?
The sanctuary covers the regions of both Medak and Nizamabad. It is located at a distance of 13 kilometres from Medak and 115 kilometres from Hyderabad. You can also get to Pocharam via Nizamabad. The nearest railway station to the Pocharan Wildlife Sanctuary is Nizamabad Railway station. Bus service from Hyderabad is also available for visiting the wildlife sanctuary.
The ideal time to visit
As the weather is congenial for the birds, you can see them in plenty during the month of December to February. You can also visit the sanctuary in monsoons to view it in all its glory.
