British Residency – A residency complex of Lucknow

The British Residency also called as Residency complex of Lucknow is a group of buildings in a common boundary which is one of the famous landmarks from our history. Its located in the heart of the city. This residency is in ruins in the present days and the Archaeological Survey of India has declared this as protected monument.

This was constructed during the rule of the Nawab Saadat Ali Khan I, who was the Nawab of Awadh Province. This served as the residence for the British Resident General who was a representative in Nawab’s court. Also the tomb of Awadh Nawab, Sadat Ali Khan, is here.

Approximately 3000 British inhabitants were served here in 1857. A long battle took place here which is known to be the Siege of Lucknow and this was the center for all the British activities for almost 3 – 4 months. The church that is nearby, still have the graves of around 2000 British soldiers and people who died in 1857 Revolt.

Today, the British Residency is utilized for the official services by the government. You can visit the Residency on all the days from 10 am to 5pm. One can reach here from Lucknow station through local transport.
